Maniac Magee by Jerry SpinelliJerry Spinelli's Maniac Magee is one of my favorite novels! It's also an award winner. Maniac's story is full of sadness, humor, and hope. We'll read the novel together as a class, and then (if possible!) watch a movie version of the book. While reading, ask yourself: What makes a home?
Maniac Magee is worth 5 AR points, and those points count both for your unit grade and for your quarterly AR goal. |

Harry HoudiniYou'll learn about one of history's greatest magicians - Harry Houdini. We'll read a portion of his biography, Spellbinder. We'll watch actual film clips and an entire documentary that aired on PBS. All of these nonfiction accounts teach us more about Houdini: the man, the magic and the myth.

AUTHOR STUDY - GARY PAULSEN & THE NOVEL HATCHETWhat possessions could you live without? For how long? What possessions would you need to survive? We'll consider these questions as we read the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
Before we start the novel, however, we'll spend some time getting to know Mr. Paulsen himself. He's an interesting man who lives his life a bit differently than you and I do. We'll read autobiographical and biographical information, watch an interview with him in which he talks about writing. Then, we'll read the novel Hatchet. The AR points for Hatchet will count toward your quarter goals. |
