Mythology - Exploring myths from around the world
|
A myth is a traditional story told to explain something's existence. A myth is not necessarily false - we would never say Genesis's creation myth is not true. A myth is usually very old, especially creation myths.
The creation myths we study will contain these five fundamental elements: 1. Supreme Being (a god, gods, or creator) 2. Idea of birth (usually humanity) 3. Earth (land) /Heavens (sky) /Water (sea) 4. Evil, mistake, or betrayal 5. Punishment *Can you see how these five elements relate to the Christian Creation "myth"? |
Formal Essay WritingSometimes, writing needs to be done in a formal way - with complete sentences, paragraphs, and coherent ideas. This is the kind of writing you'll be practicing in this unit. But before you sit down to draft your essay, we need to investigate what makes good writing. The best -- and only -- way to do this, it to read good writing. You'll be writing expository (nonfiction, informational) essays on the topic of your choice. Trust me, they sound scarier than they are. :)
"There are different rules for reading, for thinking, and for talking. Writing blends all three of them."
|
*My challenge to you: If you read something - whether a blog, a newspaper clipping, a magazine article, a letter from a friend - that you think is well written, please bring it in. We'll explore and discuss how writers put ideas together.

A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'EnglePhoto credit: www.shopcslp.com
Our class novel has been around for over 50 years. During that time, it's been considered a classic book that everyone should read. But, it's also been banned from many school libraries. It's time for you to decide which is right: is it a great book? or one that should never be read?
The major theme of the novel is Good vs. Evil. Many people believe L'Engle is using metaphors for Heaven, Hell, God, Jesus and believers everywhere. Do you see any connection between these ideas? Click here to take the sparknotes.com practice test |
